Enchanting Afternoon

I spent most of the day at the movie theater, saw a couple of movies, had a semi-decent time. So, here's my review of the entire day!

Trailers: Part 1

Family friendly fare the first time around. I begin to wonder how Get Smart can end up being bad with the cast it has.  Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway and Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson are are fully capable actors, so it is going to be left up to the director and script on this one.  I want to see it for the first time after realizing the cast it has.  I then wonder why we are not sick of children's fantasy movies by now too.  There are so many coming out in the next few months that I could give a damn about any of them outside of The Golden Compass.  The preview here was Spiderwick Chronicles by the way, I give it a meh!  Now come the truly horrific.  Nothing needs to be said about Alvin and the Chipmunks.  If you go and see it and liked the Chipmunks at all as a kid, you will most likely rape your memories.  Instead, go rent Chipmunk Adventure and sing along with the songs.  Bottom of the barrel is a movie starring Martin Lawrence and Raven Simone, two people that should be barred from making movies or television or anything else.  That said, College Road Trip will probably be the number one film the week it comes out because people are total idiots.  Oh there was also a trailer for National Treasure: Book of Secrets, but I could not be more underwhelmed by the prospect of this movie, or the trailer.

Enchanted

Amy Adams should be the draw that Julia Roberts is currently, because she has more charm and talent than Julia ever had, and is not nauseating to look at.  Seriously, if she's in a movie, you should probably see it.  Even the movie she's in with stupid Julia Roberts coming out later this year, Charlie Wilson's War.  I know this is isn't an award show bait movie, but she's absolutely stunning in it.  Now if you think she's the only good thing about it, you're wrong.  James Marsden and Timothy Spall are both particularly great in their respective roles.  Yes, James Marsden.  Apparently dressing up like a fool and dancing and singing is what he's good at.  Enchanted is enchanting and funny throughout the movie.  There are more than enough laughs for both adults and kids.  The special effects work great.  It's the best blend of animation and live-action since Who FramedRoger Rabbit?  It's hard for me to collect my thoughts on a movie that was just this good.  Um... the only bad things I can say about it are that the most emotional scenes took place before the predictable ending, thus lessening any happy feelings you could have gotten from it.  Oh and why are people obsessed with chipmunk poo?  At least the one in this movie doesn't eat it.  (9.5 / 10)

Trailers: Part 2

I'm not sure I remember all of the trailers from the second movie, but I'll give it a go.  Cloverfield is going to be amazing!  I've already expressed my love for the movie in the past, and don't need to gush over it any more than I already have.  01-18-08, put it on your calendars!  I love the concept of Be Kind Rewind too.  Jack Black can be a bit much to take, but it's a Michael Gondry movie too and I tend to enjoy those.  On second thought I remember the rest of the previews.  The remake of The Eye does not look awful, but trailers can be deceiving.  I don't have much hope for it.  Last movie was The Poughkeepsie Tapes.  It's definitely going to be one of those movies that had a good premise because it's different, but will just be another bad horror movie.

The Mist

I'm pretty sure that it was the intent, but the way people sink into madness in a crisis is far scarier than anything that could be in the mist.  I really don't want to go into spoilers, but there are some very satisfying moments regarding Marcia Gay Harden's character.  It worked pretty well still.  Thomas Jane did an adequate job in the lead role.  It was still typical Stephen King fare though, but for once it did not annoy me that the cause of the thing that would be scary enough on its own was something completely insane.  King's major problem is that he can't keep things simple enough.  A good movie, and better than average for one of King's horror movies.  Was interesting to have Frank Darabont directing something like this.  I realize I haven't said much to sell this movie to you.  It is good though. (7 / 10)

Theater Atmosphere

It's hard to decide which was more annoying, little kids behind me talking the entire time during Enchanted or old woman talking the entire time during The Mist.  No, old people talking is definitely more annoying, and actually I think I shushed her more times than I did the kids.  Also, talking during a horror movie ruins the atmosphere more than talking during a family comedy.  If I was more into confrontations with people, I would have yelled at her after the movie.

Yay, Amy!

The Eye remake, the trailer I've seen, I love how it's zero dialogue, and just going on visuals. Great way to go with it.
